Cat6 vs Cat6a — Which Should You Actually Install?

Two cables that look identical, priced very differently, and endlessly debated on forums. Cat6 or Cat6a — which one should you actually put in the walls of a home or small office across Stockport, Manchester or Cheshire? This is the honest engineer's answer, based on what we install week to week, not what a spec sheet says in isolation.

The short answer

For 95% of homes, home offices and small business fit-outs across Stockport and Greater Manchester, Cat6 is the right cable. It's cheaper, easier to terminate cleanly, handles gigabit and 2.5-gigabit comfortably over normal in-house runs, and every keystone/patch panel on the market takes it. Cat6a is the right cable when the runs are long, when 10-gigabit matters end-to-end, or when the customer specifically wants a 15-year future-proof commercial backbone.

Cat6 in one paragraph

Cat6 is a 4-pair, 23 AWG twisted-pair cable rated to carry gigabit Ethernet up to 100m and 10-gigabit Ethernet up to 55m in low-interference environments. It's the current volume standard in UK residential and small-commercial cabling. Terminates cleanly to standard Keystone modules and standard patch panels. Solid-core in the walls, stranded patch leads at each end.

Cat6a in one paragraph

Cat6a is a thicker, heavier cable — usually 22 AWG, with tighter twists and additional shielding (either foil per pair, an overall foil, or both). Rated to carry 10-gigabit Ethernet the full 100m. Terminations are fiddlier: bigger bend radius, larger keystones, and shielded panels needed to preserve the earthing path. Roughly 60–90% more expensive per metre, and slower to install because of the physical size.

Real-world speed — the bit that surprises people

Almost nothing in a UK home currently maxes out Cat6. A typical Openreach FTTP install caps at 1Gbps or 1.6Gbps to the router. A Sky Glass, Apple TV, Xbox or PS5 uses a 1Gbps Ethernet port. A NAS with 2.5Gbps NICs is starting to appear. Only professional home offices with 10-gigabit NAS backbones, or commercial server rooms, actually pull the numbers Cat6a is built for. Fitting Cat6a to a bedroom for a games console is like fitting an HGV tyre to a Ford Fiesta — it works, but you paid for capacity you'll never touch.

When Cat6a genuinely earns its money

  • Long runs — anything over about 55m where 10-gigabit needs to survive. Common in commercial fit-outs, warehouses and larger properties.
  • Home office with a 10-gigabit NAS — video editors, photographers, architects moving multi-GB files to shared storage.
  • Commercial structured cabling backbones — anywhere the client wants a 15+ year lifespan on the cable in the walls without a rip-and-replace.
  • High-EMI environments — near heavy machinery, industrial motors, or medical imaging equipment. The shielding matters.
  • PoE++ (60W and 90W) — Cat6a's thicker copper handles the higher current with less voltage drop, useful for the heaviest access points and PTZ cameras.

Where Cat6 is the honest answer

  • Bedroom, living room and study drops in a normal UK home
  • PoE access points and standard PoE cameras (Cat6 handles PoE+ fine)
  • TV, games console, streaming device wired drops
  • Home office feeds — even for full-time remote workers on video calls all day
  • Small office fit-outs of up to 30–40 drops where runs stay under 55m

Termination — the bit that ruins DIY Cat6a jobs

Cat6a is genuinely harder to terminate well. The larger conductors need a bigger bend radius, the shielding has to be earthed correctly at both ends, and the keystones require specific Cat6a-rated modules — a Cat6 keystone will accept a Cat6a cable but it'll test back as Cat5e. We see plenty of "Cat6a" installs where the cable's right but the terminations aren't, and the whole run is performing worse than a properly-terminated Cat6 would have.

Cost — a fair comparison

For a typical 8-drop home install across Stockport or Manchester, choosing Cat6a over Cat6 adds roughly 20–30% to the total install price — a mix of cable cost, harder termination, larger back-boxes and slower runs. On a 40-drop office fit-out that percentage drops to about 15% because the labour scales differently. Worth it? Only if the use case actually needs it. Is Cat6a worth it for a home?

For most UK homes, no — Cat6 handles everything a normal household throws at it. Cat6a is worth it if you have a 10-gigabit NAS, a professional home office needing full 10G to a workstation, or a specific long run that needs 10G at 100m. For a bedroom Ethernet drop or a TV port, it's overspecified.

Can Cat6 run 10-gigabit Ethernet?

Yes — up to about 55m in low-interference environments. Above that, or in electrically noisy locations, you need Cat6a for reliable 10G.

What's the maximum distance for Cat6?

100m for gigabit and 2.5-gigabit Ethernet, 55m for 10-gigabit. Cat6a extends 10-gigabit to the full 100m.

Do I need Cat6a for PoE cameras?

No. Standard PoE (15W) and PoE+ (30W) run happily on Cat6 at the distances used in a house or small business. PoE++ (60W / 90W) benefits from Cat6a for the thicker copper, but only on longer runs.

Is Cat6a compatible with Cat6 sockets?

Physically the RJ45 plug fits, but a Cat6a cable landed on a Cat6-rated keystone or panel will only test to Cat6 speeds — you're paying for Cat6a and losing the benefit. Cat6a runs need Cat6a-rated modules end-to-end.

Can you install both in the same job?

Yes — very common. Cat6a for a couple of specific runs (home office to NAS, long external run to a garden office), Cat6 for the rest of the house. That's often the honest recommendation and it keeps the price sensible.
