Why hard-wired beats Wi-Fi for anything important
Wi-Fi is convenient but Ethernet is reliable. For 4K TVs, gaming, video calls, home office and CCTV, a proper cable run removes the buffering, lag and dropouts that no amount of mesh can fix. We'll often suggest a mix — wired backbone, Wi-Fi for the convenience devices.
Termination that meets the spec — T568B, punched down, tested
A Cat6 cable is only as good as its terminations. We land every socket to T568B, untwist no more than 13mm at the punch-down, use a proper impact tool (not push-in RJ45 plugs on solid-core cable — the single most common reason a run tests bad), and terminate to Keystone modules or 24-port patch panels. Every finished run is tested end-to-end with a Fluke-style cable tester for continuity on all 8 conductors, wire-map correctness (no split pairs), and link speed negotiation at 1Gbps or 2.5Gbps. Any run that doesn't test clean gets reterminated on the spot. On commercial jobs you get written test results per drop.
Cable routing — where the tidy install actually happens
Where a cable runs determines whether the finished job looks professional or bodged. Standard order of preference: existing floor voids > loft space > riser cupboards > wall chases behind plaster > surface trunking. We won't run Cat6 alongside 240V mains for more than a metre parallel (induction crosstalk kills speed), we won't sharp-bend Cat6 tighter than 4x the cable diameter (permanently distorts the twists), and we won't fish cable through insulation without a proper conduit sleeve. On extensions and renovations we work directly with your builder to get first-fix cabling in before plasterboard — dramatically cheaper and infinitely tidier than a retrofit.

Fibre — when Cat6 isn't the right cable
For runs over 90m (Cat6's copper limit at gigabit), building-to-building outdoor runs where lightning induction is a risk, or anywhere a customer wants a genuinely future-proof backbone, we install OS2 single-mode or OM4 multimode fibre with LC connectors. Terminated with a fusion splicer, tested with an OTDR, and delivered into a small fibre patch box with a media converter or SFP switch at each end. Common on Marple and Alderley Edge properties with a coach-house or garden office 100m+ from the main house, and on any HMO or block with multiple flats that need a shared backbone.
Commercial data cabling — sectors we work with
About half our data cabling work is now commercial. Different sectors have very different requirements — a dental practice needs medical device compliance and separated networks, a warehouse needs cable routed through cable trays around forklift paths, and a care home needs cabling that can be worked on without disrupting residents. We plan around the actual environment, not off a generic template.

UniFi & Omada — the kit we standardise on
For structured cabling that terminates into a managed network we standardise on Ubiquiti UniFi or TP-Link Omada — both give proper managed switching, VLAN segmentation, cloud dashboards and long-term firmware support without the eye-watering licensing cost of Cisco Meraki. We're not brand-locked though; where a client already runs Cisco, HPE Aruba or a specific vendor, we'll cable and integrate to their standard so their existing IT provider can adopt it cleanly.

Every job is a fixed price agreed before we start — no callout charge, no surprise add-ons. Cost depends on the scope of work, the parts needed, access (loft, ladder or scaffold), and how long the cabling needs to be.
