Honest diagnosis first
Half the Wi-Fi problems we see are fixed without a new mesh kit — sometimes it's the router placement, an outdated channel setting, or a single dead spot a £45 access point cures. We'll explain what's actually causing the issue and what the right fix is. We don't sell you kit you don't need.
Mesh Wi-Fi installation — whole-house coverage
Mesh is the right answer for most Stockport homes over about 100m² or with thick internal walls. A two- or three-pack of nodes (TP-Link Deco, eero Pro, Asus ZenWiFi) gives one seamless network — your phone hands off between nodes as you walk through the house, no dropouts, no separate 'upstairs' SSID. We position nodes properly, kill the old router's Wi-Fi to stop interference, and where possible Ethernet-backhaul the nodes for full-speed performance on every floor.

Ceiling-mounted access points for larger homes
For bigger properties, extensions, garden offices or anywhere mesh starts struggling, a hard-wired ceiling-mounted access point (Ubiquiti UniFi, TP-Link Omada) is the proper fix. Cable run back to the router or a PoE switch, AP tucked discreetly in the ceiling, one strong signal covering rooms a mesh node can't reach. Often the right call for stone-built properties in Marple, larger detached houses around Bramhall, and anywhere the Wi-Fi needs to reach a garden office or annex.
Wired backbone, wireless reach
The best home networks combine both. A wired Ethernet backbone gives your mesh nodes a rock-solid link back to the router, and lets your TV, games console, work PC and CCTV use proper cable instead of fighting for Wi-Fi airtime. The difference is night and day.

Seamless roaming, single SSID — done properly
The point of a proper Wi-Fi install is that your phone stays connected as you walk from the kitchen extension to the front bedroom without you noticing. That means one SSID (not 'Home' and 'Home_5G' and 'Home_Extender'), all access points on the same VLAN, 802.11k/v/r roaming enabled, minimum RSSI thresholds set so devices hand off instead of clinging to a distant AP, and channel plans that don't fight each other. This is standard on UniFi and Omada and it's the single biggest reason a proper install feels different from a bag of extenders.
VLANs, IoT and guest networks
A modern home has a lot of devices that shouldn't share a network — smart bulbs, robot hoovers, cheap cameras, TVs and games consoles. We segregate these onto their own VLAN so a compromised IoT device can't sniff your work laptop or reach your NAS. Guest Wi-Fi runs on a separate VLAN with client isolation so visitors get internet but can't see your printer, your CCTV or each other. Work-from-home traffic can be prioritised (QoS) so a big Steam download doesn't tank a Teams call. All of this is set up once, invisible to you, and just works.

Why extenders and powerline usually make things worse
A Wi-Fi extender halves your bandwidth (it uses the same radio to talk to the router and to your phone) and creates a second SSID your device sticks to long after it should have handed off. Powerline plugs rely on the quality of your ring main — on any house built before ~2005, or with a fridge or induction hob on the same circuit, they drop from a claimed 1000Mbps to sometimes single digits. We regularly rip both out and replace them with a single cabled access point that does the whole job for less money and forever more reliably. If you've bought either and been disappointed, that's why.
Cabling to the AP — where the speed actually comes from
A ceiling access point on Cat6 delivers close to full broadband speed at every device it serves. A mesh node on wireless backhaul roughly halves it. So the difference between a good and a great install is almost always the cabling. We route Cat6 through lofts, cupboards, floor voids and existing conduits — whatever gets the AP wired without visible cable. Where a cable genuinely can't run (listed properties, solid concrete floors) we'll spec a premium mesh with a dedicated 6GHz backhaul channel that gets close to wired performance.

Every job is a fixed price agreed before we start — no callout charge, no surprise add-ons. Cost depends on the scope of work, the parts needed, access (loft, ladder or scaffold), and how long the cabling needs to be.
