Wi-Fi Dead Spots: The Real Fix Guide (Not Another Booster)

Wi-Fi dead spots in one room, on the landing, or in the garden? An engineer's guide to why extenders fail, when mesh works, and when a wired access point is the only proper fix — from Stockport, South Manchester and Cheshire jobs.

A Wi-Fi dead spot is that one room, one corner, or one landing where the signal just gives up. Video calls stutter, streaming buffers, the smart bulb won't respond. We survey these every week across Stockport, South Manchester and Cheshire — and nine times out of ten the fix is not what people expect.

What actually causes a dead spot

Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and with anything solid in the way. In UK homes the usual culprits are:

  • Thick brick or stone walls — Victorian and Edwardian houses across Heaton Moor, Didsbury and Marple lose a huge chunk of signal through a single internal wall.
  • Foil-backed insulation — modern loft conversions and dormer extensions are the worst offenders. The foil layer is effectively a Wi-Fi mirror.
  • Router in a cupboard — the ISP put it where the master socket lives, which is often under the stairs or in a meter box. Every wall it has to punch through starts from there.
  • 2.4GHz interference — baby monitors, older cordless phones, and every neighbour on the same channel in a terrace.
  • Chimney breasts and steel RSJs — the invisible ones. Open-plan extensions often have a steel beam through the middle of the ceiling that blocks upstairs signal completely.

Why extenders and boosters usually make it worse

The £30 plug-in extender is where most people start. It's also why most people are still reading articles like this. An extender uses the same single radio to talk to the router and to your phone — so it roughly halves the bandwidth it delivers. It creates a second SSID (usually "YourWifi_EXT") that your phone latches on to and refuses to let go of, even when you've walked back into a strong-signal room. And it inherits every bit of interference the router has.

Powerline plugs are the same story with a different twist — they rely on the quality of your ring main. Any house built before ~2005, or with a fridge, induction hob or LED downlights on the same circuit, sees them drop from a headline 1000Mbps to genuinely single digits. We rip both out most weeks.

Mesh — when it works and when it doesn't

A proper mesh system (TP-Link Deco, eero Pro, Asus ZenWiFi) is the right answer for a lot of Stockport homes. Multiple nodes, one SSID, seamless roaming, no dead spots — when the wireless backhaul between nodes is strong enough.

Mesh struggles when nodes are too far apart, when there's a thick internal wall between them, or when the "far" node ends up daisy-chained off another far node. Every wireless hop roughly halves the throughput, so a bedroom served by a node two hops from the router can end up slower than the old router was.

The fix — and this is what most installers won't tell you — is to run Ethernet between the nodes. Ethernet-backhauled mesh is a completely different animal to wireless-backhauled mesh. Full speed at every node. See our Mesh vs Access Points guide for the honest comparison.

Wired access points — the fix that actually holds

For rooms mesh genuinely can't reach — the garden office, the attic bedroom, the granny annex across the drive — a hard-wired ceiling access point is the only proper answer. One Cat6 run back to the router or a PoE switch, a discreet UniFi or Omada AP tucked in the ceiling, and you get full broadband speed in a room that couldn't hold a Zoom call before.

Router placement — the free fix people never try

Before spending anything, try this. Move your router:

  • Out of the cupboard, out of the meter box, off the floor.
  • Roughly central to the house, not tucked in the front corner where the ISP fitted the master socket.
  • At about waist height on a shelf, not behind the TV where the metal chassis blocks half the signal.
  • Away from the microwave, cordless phone base and baby monitor.

A £5 longer Ethernet lead from the master socket to a better router location fixes more dead spots than any extender ever will.

The engineer's decision tree

  1. Weak in one adjacent room — move the router, or add one mesh node line-of-sight from it.
  2. Weak upstairs — one mesh node upstairs, ideally Ethernet-backhauled. See our Wi-Fi slow upstairs guide.
  3. Weak in a garden office / annex / detached outbuilding — outdoor wired AP or a bridge link. Mesh will not do this reliably.
  4. Weak everywhere except right next to the router — the router is the problem. Swap it, or move it and turn its Wi-Fi off in favour of a proper mesh or UniFi setup.
  5. Weak only at peak times — not a dead spot, it's channel congestion. A 5GHz-capable router or a channel plan change fixes it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a stronger router fix a dead spot?

Sometimes, if the dead spot is caused by a genuinely weak old router. But for most homes the problem is distance and walls, not transmit power — a router at one end of the house can't legally boost its way to the other end. A mesh node or wired access point is almost always the better fix.

Is mesh always better than a single router?

For homes over about 100m² or with thick internal walls, yes. For a modern flat or a small terrace with the router centrally placed, a single good router is often plenty and mesh is overkill.

Do I need to run cables through my walls?

Only if you go the wired-AP route or want Ethernet-backhauled mesh. Cables can usually run through lofts, floor voids or existing conduits with minimal disruption. Where cabling genuinely isn't possible we spec a premium mesh with a dedicated 6GHz backhaul channel that gets close to wired performance.

What about Wi-Fi 7 — is it worth waiting?

For most homes, no. Wi-Fi 6 is more than enough for anything you can actually buy broadband-wise in the UK today. Wi-Fi 7 helps in very high-density device environments — worth it for a networking enthusiast, not worth waiting for if your kids can't stream in their bedrooms today.

Can Wi-Fi reach my garden office?

Depends on distance, walls and what's between. Under 15m through one wall — usually yes with an outdoor-rated AP mounted on the house facing the office. Further, or with obstructions — you'll want a wired link or a proper outdoor bridge. See our garden office Wi-Fi page.

How much does a proper Wi-Fi fix cost?

A single wired access point installed and tested is usually £250–£450 fitted, depending on cable route difficulty. A whole-house mesh install starts around £350. A full UniFi network with multiple APs, a switch and cabling is more — priced case by case after the survey.
