Mesh Wi-Fi vs Access Points — What Actually Works In A UK Home

Mesh is the headline grabber. Wired access points are usually better. Here's the honest difference, and when each one wins.

Mesh kits get all the marketing. Wired access points are what most engineers actually fit when a customer wants real coverage. Here's the difference and when each one wins.

How mesh Wi-Fi actually works

A mesh kit is two or three identical units. The first plugs into your router. The others sit elsewhere in the house and talk back to it wirelessly. That wireless backhaul is the catch — every hop costs you speed, and walls (especially old Stockport solid-brick walls) eat signal.

How access points work

A wired access point is a Wi-Fi radio fed by a Cat6 cable from your router. Because the backhaul is wired, every AP gives you full router-grade speed at the far end of the house. One in the lounge, one in the loft, one in the garden room — they hand off seamlessly.

When mesh is the right answer

  • You're renting and can't run cable.
  • You only need to cover one extra room.
  • You want a setup you can plug in yourself.

When access points win

  • You've got a three-storey town house, large garden, or a converted loft.
  • You work from home and need rock-steady Wi-Fi for calls.
  • You're running smart kit — cameras, doorbells, garden lighting — that doesn't tolerate drop-outs.
  • You've already had a mesh kit and it's still patchy.

What we usually recommend in Stockport

For most Victorian and Edwardian houses across Heaton, Cheadle and Bramhall, one wired access point on each floor will absolutely flatten any mesh kit at the same price. The cable run is the work — once that's in, the radios are cheap.
