"Structured cabling" is one of those phrases that sounds like industry jargon until you've seen the alternative — an office where someone's just run a Cat6 cable straight from a switch under the desk to each PC, with no patch panel, no labels, and a spaghetti cabinet nobody wants to touch. What structured cabling actually means
Structured cabling is a documented, standards-based approach to running a building's data network. Every drop terminates in a labelled keystone at one end and a labelled port on a patch panel at the other. The patch panel sits in a cabinet with the switch, and short patch leads make the "live" connections. If a machine moves, if a port dies, if the network grows, you re-patch — you don't re-run cable through the walls. That's the whole point.
The four things every structured cabling install includes
- Horizontal cabling — the runs from each wall socket back to the cabinet. Usually Cat6 or Cat6a solid-core, kept under 90m per run.
- A telecoms cabinet — wall-mounted for a small office (6U or 9U), floor-standing for anything larger. Houses the patch panel, switch, PDU and (usually) the router or firewall.
- A patch panel — 24-port or 48-port, punch-down at the back, RJ45 at the front. Every horizontal run lands here and gets a printed label matching the wall socket.
- Test results and documentation — a floor plan showing where each drop terminates, a labelled patch schedule, and Fluke-style test results per port. This is the handover pack.
Why "just run a cable" fails within 2 years

Is structured cabling overkill for a small office?
No — the smaller the business, the more painful ad-hoc cabling becomes over time. A properly-terminated 8-drop office with a patch panel and a small cabinet costs marginally more than trailing cables, and saves multiples of that in avoided rip-and-redo work within 2–3 years.
How long does a structured cabling install take?
A typical 10–15-drop small office fit-out is 1–2 days on site including testing and documentation. Larger commercial jobs (40+ drops, multi-floor) run 3–5 days. We work around business hours where needed.
Do you install the network switches too?
Yes — structured cabling terminates into a cabinet, and we fit the managed switch (UniFi or Omada usually), PoE injectors, patch leads and firewall as part of the same job. Handed over live and tested.
Can you cable a live office without disruption?
Yes — a lot of our commercial work is done in an office that stays open. Early mornings, evenings and weekends where needed, phased over multiple visits, or done floor by floor. The site survey plans it around your business hours.
