Latency
Latency is the time data takes to travel to a destination and back, usually shown as ping in milliseconds. Lower is helpful, but one ping number includes the local network, broadband access network, internet routing and the game server. Jitter
Jitter is the variation in delay. A connection that moves between quick and slow responses can feel worse than a steady connection with a slightly higher average ping. Shared wireless airtime, interference and weak mesh backhaul can all make local latency less consistent.
Packet loss
Packet loss means some data does not arrive correctly. In a game that can appear as rubber-banding, delayed actions, voice-chat breakup or disconnections. Loss can occur outside the home, but testing on Ethernet is a useful way to see whether the local wireless link contributes.
Bandwidth
Live gameplay may use far less bandwidth than a large download, but updates, cloud backups, streaming and other household use still compete for the connection. A fast broadband package helps with capacity; it does not guarantee low jitter or zero loss.
Does Ethernet reduce ping?
It can reduce and stabilise the portion of latency created inside the property, especially when the current Wi-Fi path is weak, congested or crosses several mesh nodes. If the wireless connection is already excellent, the average ping difference may be small, but Ethernet can still reduce variation.
Ethernet cannot repair congestion in the provider network, poor internet routing or an overloaded game server. If ping remains high on a direct wired test, investigate beyond the home Wi-Fi.
Is mesh Wi-Fi good enough for gaming?
It can be. A gaming device close to a well-positioned node with a strong backhaul path may perform reliably. Problems become more likely when the device sits at the edge of coverage, the mesh uses several wireless hops, neighbouring networks are busy or other devices consume the same airtime.

Is plugging into a mesh node the same as Ethernet?
Only if the mesh node has a wired backhaul path to the main network. When the node communicates with the router wirelessly, a short Ethernet lead removes the Wi-Fi link between the console and node, but the traffic still travels over wireless backhaul.
That arrangement may still be better than the console's own Wi-Fi in a particular location, so it is worth testing. Just describe it accurately: it is Ethernet to a wireless bridge, not end-to-end cabling.
Should you hardwire a gaming PC or a console?
Hardwire fixed devices when reliability matters, the equipment stays in one place and a safe, sensible route exists. Gaming PCs, consoles, televisions, streaming devices and desktop workstations are strong candidates because none benefits from mobility.

The simplest design is a tested permanent Cat6 link from the router or central network switch to a data outlet near the setup, followed by a short patch lead to the device. Where several wired devices sit together, a correctly selected small switch can serve the PC, console and television from one uplink.
The route should avoid trip hazards, crushed cable, sharp bends and unsuitable outdoor exposure.
