When the network already exists — but it does not work properly
This service is for existing business networks that have become unreliable, confusing or difficult to maintain. The problem might be one failed cable, a badly patched cabinet, an access point in the wrong place, a tired switch, a router issue or several small faults layered on top of each other. We work through the network logically before recommending replacement equipment.
Business network problems we investigate
A useful fault description is often a symptom rather than a diagnosis. You do not need to know whether the problem is the switch, WiFi, cabling or internet connection before calling us — separating those layers is part of the job.
- WiFi dropping out or becoming unreliable around the premises
- Ethernet sockets or network ports that have stopped working
- Intermittent cabling faults and damaged patch leads
- Slow or inconsistent connectivity between network devices
- Access points, switches or routers that appear offline
- Network problems after equipment, desks or rooms have been moved
- Unknown cables and ports in an inherited network cabinet
- A network that has grown without documentation or a clear layout
Fault finding before parts swapping
We start by defining what is actually failing: one device, one room, one cable run, the local network, the WiFi layer or the internet connection itself. From there we trace the relevant path through the network, inspect the physical cabling and patching, check the network equipment involved and test the affected links as appropriate. The aim is to narrow the fault before changing equipment, not replace several boxes and hope one of them was the problem.
- Confirm which users, areas or devices are affected
- Separate internet faults from internal network faults
- Trace patching and identify the relevant cable path
- Check power, link status and physical connections
- Test suspect data links as appropriate to the fault
- Review access-point, switch or router configuration where it is within scope
Data cabling repairs, testing and dead network points
Dead Ethernet sockets, damaged cable, poor terminations and undocumented patching can make a wider network problem look more complicated than it is. We can trace customer-owned data cabling, inspect terminations, test suspect links and repair or replace the affected run where practical.
For planned new cabling rather than fault repair, see our data cabling service.
Network cabinet and comms-room tidy-ups
A cabinet does not need to look pretty for the sake of a photograph — it needs to be understandable, serviceable and safe to work on. Where years of moves and changes have left patch leads tangled, ports unidentified or old equipment mixed in with the live network, we can work through what is actually in use and create a cleaner handover point.
If the network is generally working and the main problem is a tangled, undocumented or awkward cabinet rather than an active fault, see our dedicated network cabinet and comms cupboard tidy-up service.
- Trace and identify active patching where practical
- Remove genuinely redundant patch leads once confirmed
- Repatch live connections into a clearer layout
- Label ports, cables or equipment where included in scope
- Replace damaged or inappropriate patch leads
- Reposition supported network equipment where the cabinet layout requires it
- Document the agreed final layout to suit the project
Inherited networks and sites with little or no documentation
New tenant, previous IT company gone, several generations of equipment, nobody knows which port feeds which room — these are common network problems. We can map the physical side far enough to make the system understandable, identify obvious risks or dead infrastructure and agree what should be retained, repaired, labelled or removed. We do not assume an old-looking cabinet needs a full rebuild if the underlying equipment and cabling are still doing their job.
Example: taking control of an inherited care-home network
On one Greater Manchester care-home project, new owners inherited a network with no credentials, documentation or administrative access. Evolution Data & Digital replaced the relevant infrastructure with a managed UniFi network using a Cloud Gateway Ultra, a 24-port PoE switch and seven Ubiquiti access points, then tested the installation and established known administrative control. The project later expanded to four VoIP phones. It is a real example of tracing an undocumented system, deciding what needed to change and returning control of the customer-side network to the client.
WiFi fault, network fault or internet fault?
A slow speed test does not automatically mean the broadband line is bad, and a strong WiFi signal does not prove the internal network is healthy. We separate the incoming connection, router/firewall, switching, wired cabling and wireless coverage so the repair targets the correct layer.
If the problem turns out to need a wider redesign or new access-point deployment, see our commercial network installation service. If the issue is the connection coming into the business, see business internet solutions.
Repair what makes sense; replace what genuinely needs replacing
A repair visit is not an excuse to sell a completely new network. If a switch, access point, router, cabinet or cable is serviceable and still appropriate for the site, we can keep it. Where equipment is failing, unsupported, badly sized for the job or creating the fault, we will explain why replacement or redesign is the more sensible route before changing the scope.
Network maintenance, adds, moves and changes
Some businesses do not need a full outsourced IT contract; they just need somebody who can keep the physical network understandable as the premises change. Ongoing work can include adding or moving network points, changing patching, replacing failed network hardware, adding access points, tidying cabinets and maintaining equipment within an agreed support scope.
- Adds and moves for data points and network equipment
- Replacement of failed switches or access points where appropriate
- Cabinet changes and repatching
- WiFi changes when rooms or working areas move
- Network labelling and documentation updates where agreed
- Remote management on supported equipment where included in scope
Physical network support — not a generic outsourced IT helpdesk
Our strength is the customer-side network and the infrastructure around it: cabling, WiFi, access points, switches, routers, cabinets and the connection between them. We are not presenting this page as unlimited desktop support, Microsoft 365 administration, server management, cybersecurity monitoring or a 24/7 network-operations centre. Where a business already has an MSP or IT provider, we are happy to handle the physical network layer and coordinate the handover with them.
Working alongside your existing IT company
Many faults sit between the desk-support world and the physical building network. Your IT provider may know the device should be on switch port 18 but need somebody on site to trace the cable, replace a run, move an access point or reorganise the cabinet. We can agree that split before starting so the client knows who owns each part of the problem.
Manchester, Cheshire and North West coverage
We are Stockport-based and take on suitable business network fault-finding, repair and cabinet-remediation work across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and the wider North West. Commercial repair work is considered around the value and complexity of the job rather than treated like a small domestic call-out radius.
What affects the cost of network fault finding
A quote or non-invasive discussion is free. Where the repair scope cannot be known until hands-on diagnosis has taken place, we explain any diagnostic charge before that work starts. The final cost depends on the time needed to isolate the fault, access to the network and cabling, replacement parts, testing required and whether the visit develops into agreed remedial work such as new cabling, cabinet changes or equipment replacement.
