Most modern TVs can be safely wall-mounted — and in most UK homes, most walls can carry a TV. But "most" isn't "all", and we've turned up to plenty of Stockport jobs where the wall the customer chose won't safely hold what they've bought. This is the honest engineer's guide to what actually mounts where.
Which TVs can be wall-mounted?
Almost all modern flat-screen TVs — LCD, LED, QLED, OLED, mini-LED, Sky Glass — have standard VESA mounting holes on the back and are designed to be wall-mounted. Sizes from 32" up to 98" mount happily on the right bracket. The rare exceptions are some ultra-slim OLEDs that use manufacturer-specific brackets (LG Gallery series, Samsung "The Frame"), and very old plasma TVs that are usually too heavy to justify moving.
Which walls can safely take a TV?
Solid brick or block — always fine
The best mounting surface. Any external wall of a Stockport home, and most load-bearing internal walls, are solid masonry. Properly plugged and bolted, a solid wall will happily carry any domestic TV up to 98".
Plasterboard on timber studs — fine, with care
Standard modern internal walls. Safe for most TVs up to about 65" if the bracket is bolted through the studs (not just into the board). We find the studs with a proper metal-detecting stud finder, mark them, and mount into solid timber. Plasterboard fixings alone (hollow-wall anchors, toggle bolts) are never enough for a TV that matters.
Plasterboard on dot-and-dab masonry — the trickiest one
Common in newer builds and refurbished flats. There's a 10–20mm air gap between the plasterboard and the brick behind. Standard fixings pull straight out; long fixings can crack the plaster. The right fix is longer bolts through the plasterboard into the brick, with a small spacer to prevent the board from being crushed. This is where a lot of DIY installs go wrong.
Media walls and stud-built false walls
We build a lot of these in Cheadle, Bramhall and Wilmslow. Properly designed, they hide every cable, mount any TV size and give the cleanest possible finish. Poorly designed, they're just a wobbly stud wall that flexes when you touch the TV. Build the frame right and it takes a 98" TV without a second thought.
Chimney breasts
Almost always fine — solid brick with a plastered face. The only care needed is around old chimney flues where drilling could break through. A quick tap-test and a shallow pilot hole tells us straight away.
Walls we'll advise against
Single-skin conservatory walls, hollow partition walls with no timber to catch, and any wall obviously showing damp, cracks or previous repair. We'll tell you honestly on the day if a wall isn't right — and 90% of the time there's a better wall two metres away.
What about above a fireplace?
Structurally, above a working fireplace is usually fine — chimney breasts are solid. The genuine concerns are heat and viewing angle. Modern gas fires kick out less heat than open coal, and most TVs sit above the danger zone, but we always check the manufacturer's clearance. Viewing angle is the bigger issue — a TV mounted too high looks great in a photo and gives you a sore neck by episode three. We'll flag both.

Can any TV be wall mounted?
Almost all modern flat-screen TVs from 32" upwards can be safely wall-mounted — they use standard VESA mounting patterns. The only exceptions are some designer OLEDs that use brand-specific mounts and very old, very heavy plasma TVs.
Is it safe to mount a TV on a plasterboard wall?
Yes, if the bracket is bolted through into the timber studs behind the board. Plasterboard alone can't take a TV's weight — cheap hollow-wall anchors are the single biggest cause of TVs pulling off walls.
Can I wall mount a TV on a dot-and-dab wall?
Yes, but it needs longer fixings that go through the plasterboard into the brick behind, with a spacer to stop the board being crushed. This is the setup most DIY installs get wrong.
How high should a wall-mounted TV be?
For a comfortable, cinema-style viewing position, the centre of the screen should sit roughly at eye level from your normal seating position — usually 1.1m to 1.3m from the floor. Above a fireplace, tilt the bracket down to compensate.
Can you hide the cables in the wall?
In almost every solid or stud wall, yes. Power needs a proper new socket behind the TV (we're qualified to install this); HDMI and speaker cables run through the void and out below.
