For a rural UK property without fibre, the two realistic options are Starlink or a 4G/5G home broadband router. Both work. Neither is universally the right answer. - 4G/5G home broadband — cheaper (£25–£40/month, no big hardware cost), lower latency where signal is strong, but wildly variable by location and time of day. Best where you get 3+ bars of 4G at the property.
Speed
Starlink delivers 150–250Mbps down, 15–40Mbps up consistently. It doesn't slow down at peak times in the UK because the constellation has plenty of capacity here.
4G at a good signal location delivers 40–100Mbps down, 5–20Mbps up. 5G, where you can actually get it (Stockport, Manchester, parts of Cheshire), delivers 200–500Mbps down, but the coverage map lies — actual signal at a rural property is usually much weaker than the operator maps suggest. At peak times a 4G router on a busy cell can drop to 5–10Mbps.
Latency
4G latency runs 25–50ms — better than Starlink's 30–60ms, but not dramatically. 5G is 10–20ms where you can get it — genuinely fibre-class. For streaming, video calls and general web use, all three are fine. For competitive online gaming, 5G wins where available, then fibre, then 4G, then Starlink.
Reliability
Starlink is more consistent day-to-day. Once installed with a clear sky view, it delivers similar speeds morning, evening and weekend. Weather causes a 10–20% dip but no outages except in unusually heavy snow.
4G/5G reliability depends entirely on the cell you're connecting to. If it's a rural cell with a few other users, it's rock-solid. If it's a suburban cell that also serves a housing estate, evening speeds can be terrible. This is the single biggest hidden cost of 4G broadband — no supplier will guarantee peak-time performance.

How to decide
- Check the 4G/5G signal at the actual property — not the coverage map. Stand where the router would go, on the network you'd use, and check bars and speed. Or borrow a router on a 14-day return.
- If 4G is 3+ bars and 5G is available, try 4G/5G first. Cheaper, no install cost, no long contract.
- If 4G is 1–2 bars or nothing, Starlink is the honest answer. An external 4G antenna helps a bit but rarely turns a weak signal into a reliable connection.
- If reliability is critical (home office, business), Starlink first, or a dual-WAN setup with both.
