Starlink looks like magic on paper — fast, fits anywhere, no Openreach. But it isn't always the right answer, and fibre isn't always available. Here's how we help Stockport customers choose.
When fibre wins
- You're inside a full-fibre footprint. Most of Stockport now has Openreach FTTP or CityFibre. Speeds are similar to Starlink, latency is lower, and monthly cost is usually less.
- You stream a lot of 4K or work from home on video calls. Fibre's lower latency feels noticeably better in Teams and Zoom.
- You don't want a roof install. Fibre comes in through a small box on the wall.
When Starlink wins
- You're on the Peak fringe — parts of Marple Bridge, Mellor, Disley, Hayfield — where fibre simply isn't there and copper broadband is painful.
- You need it fast. Starlink can be live the day it arrives; fibre installs sometimes wait weeks for a slot.
- You run a remote site — a farm office, paddock cabin, allotment, or off-grid build — where running a line in is impractical.
- You need a backup. Plenty of Stockport businesses keep Starlink as a redundant link behind fibre.
What a proper Starlink install looks like
The dish needs an unobstructed view of the sky in a wide arc — trees and chimneys cause drop-outs. We mount on the chimney or a pole, weather-seal every penetration, and route the cable through the loft to a sensible point indoors. The factory mount is fine for a back garden trial; it's not fine on a roof.
The honest verdict
In central Stockport — Cheadle, Heaton, Edgeley, Bramhall — fibre wins on cost and latency. Out toward the hills, Starlink genuinely transforms what's possible. We'll happily tell you which one suits your address.
