You've got Starlink installed. The app says 220Mbps to the dish. And yet the Wi-Fi at the other end of the house is still buffering Netflix. Sound familiar? This is the single most common Starlink call we get across Stockport, Cheshire and the Peak fringe — and the fix almost never involves the dish.

The stock Starlink router is the bottleneck
Starlink ships with either a Gen 2 or Gen 3 router. Both are competent for a small flat or a single open-plan room — but they are not proper household Wi-Fi. They have weak radio power, no external antennas, no wired backhaul options beyond a single Ethernet adapter, and Wi-Fi settings that can only be changed through the Starlink app. Push signal through a solid Victorian wall, up two floors of a stone-built cottage, or across a converted farm building and the coverage falls off a cliff.
The speed the dish delivers doesn't matter if the Wi-Fi can't distribute it. A 220Mbps line reaching a bedroom at 8Mbps is a Wi-Fi problem, not a Starlink problem.
Step 1 — put the Starlink router into bypass mode
Both Gen 2 and Gen 3 Starlink routers support bypass (Ethernet) mode. In bypass, the Starlink router stops broadcasting Wi-Fi and just passes an Ethernet WAN feed to a proper router of your choice. You still get dish status inside the Starlink app, but the actual network is yours to design.
On Gen 3 you plug into the built-in Ethernet port. On Gen 2 you need the official Starlink Ethernet Adapter (a small dongle that clips into the cable between dish and router). It's a five-minute change and it's the foundation of every good Starlink install.
Step 2 — put a proper router in front
Once bypass mode is enabled, the Starlink line behaves like any other WAN connection. You can plug it into:
- A UniFi Dream Router or Dream Machine — our standard recommendation for a well-designed home
- A TP-Link Omada gateway — similar capability, slightly cheaper
- A Deco / Orbi / eero mesh system — for households that want an app-managed install without the professional gear
- A Draytek or PfSense box — for home offices that need dual-WAN failover with a second internet line
Step 3 — get coverage to every room
For most Stockport homes (semi-detached, 3-bed, plasterboard walls) a decent mesh will handle it. Two or three nodes, ideally on a wired backhaul, gives seamless coverage upstairs and down.
For anything larger, older, or with thick stone walls — we install hard-wired ceiling access points. One UniFi or Omada access point per floor, cabled back to a central switch with Cat6, delivers gigabit-class Wi-Fi to every room with no dead spots and no reboots. It's the same kit used in offices and hotels, and it's what a lot of Cheshire farms and converted barns actually need.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to replace the Starlink router?
You don't have to replace it — you put it into bypass mode. The Starlink router stays in place, still shows in the Starlink app, but stops broadcasting its own Wi-Fi. Your new router handles the network.
Will bypass mode void the Starlink warranty?
No — it's an official feature Starlink documents and supports. It's the recommended setup for anyone with existing networking gear.
Can I use my own mesh system with Starlink?
Yes — any consumer mesh (Deco, eero, Orbi, Google Nest Wi-Fi) works fine with Starlink in bypass mode. Just plug the mesh's WAN port into the Starlink Ethernet output.
Will this improve my speed?
It won't increase what the dish delivers, but it will let the whole house actually receive that speed. If you're seeing 220Mbps at the dish and 8Mbps in the back bedroom, a proper router and access points typically get every room to 150–220Mbps.
Do you install this in a single visit?
Yes — for most jobs a Starlink Wi-Fi upgrade is one visit. Half a day for a mesh retrofit, a full day for hard-wired access points with cabling. Quoted upfront.
Can you do this if Starlink was installed by someone else?
Absolutely — a lot of our Starlink Wi-Fi jobs are retrofits where the original installer only fitted the dish and left the stock router. We won't touch the dish itself if it's working; we just replace the network side.
