What TV aerial removal actually involves
A proper removal isn't just cutting the cable and pulling the aerial down. Done cleanly it's four separate steps: safe take-down of the aerial at height, unbolting or de-lashing the bracket from the chimney stack or gable, stripping the coax cable back through any wall or roof penetrations, and sealing every hole and screw fixing so the wall is weather-tight and paint-ready. Everything gets bagged up and taken away for aluminium recycling. Why sealing the wall properly matters
This is where DIY removals go wrong. A chimney-mounted aerial typically has four to six masonry fixings, plus a cable exit through a soffit or a chimney corbel. Left open, those fixings become water ingress points — water tracks down inside the render, freezes in winter, blows the plaster in the room below, and the customer's got a water-damage claim eighteen months later that's traceable straight back to the aerial that was pulled off. We fill every fixing with colour-matched mastic and weatherproof sealant, and cap the cable penetration properly. It's a ten-minute finishing job that stops a several-hundred-pound problem later.
What happens to the old aerial and cable?
Aluminium and steel aerials are almost 100% recyclable — they go to the scrap merchant with the coax, which has a copper inner conductor and is recycled the same way. We don't leave anything on site unless you specifically ask us to (some customers want the coax left in place for future use, which we're happy to do — we just cap the ends).
Can I just do it myself?
For a loft aerial with easy access, yes — as long as the cable is cleanly disconnected and the penetration is sealed. For anything on a chimney or a gable, the honest answer is no, unless you've got proper ladder training, roof access experience and are insured for working at height.
