We get asked this by customers who've priced up a professional removal and are wondering whether they can save the labour and do it themselves. Honest answer: it depends entirely on where the aerial or dish is mounted, how comfortable you are with ladders, and whether you've got the tools to seal the wall properly afterwards. Some removals are genuinely fine to DIY. Some really aren't. Here's the engineer's view — no sales pitch, just what we actually think.

When it's genuinely fine to DIY
There are three scenarios where a competent homeowner can take an aerial or dish down safely without calling anyone in:
- A loft aerial. No height risk, no wall to seal (usually), a few screws and a cable to unclip. If you can get into the loft and you're comfortable there, this is a straightforward DIY job.
- A ground-floor wall-mounted mini-dish or aerial. Reachable from a stepladder on solid ground, four bolts, one cable. As long as you've got the right mastic to fill the bolt holes afterwards, this is fine.
- A dish or aerial that's already fallen off or is completely detached. The height risk is already gone. What's left is unbolting a bracket at a comfortable working height and sealing the holes.
When it really isn't safe to DIY
The line moves quickly once you're above ground floor. The specific situations where we'd tell any customer to book a professional:
- Anything on a chimney. Roof ladders and roof hooks are specialist kit. A domestic extension ladder leaned against a gutter and used to shuffle onto a roof is genuinely how most serious falls happen. Chimney work also needs the lashing kit cut with the aerial supported — get that wrong and it drops.
- Anything at first-floor height on a gable. Long ladder work requires footing, tying off, and a specific working posture — bolts are usually tight, corroded and need real force with one hand while you steady yourself with the other. It's not the same as painting a soffit.
- Anywhere near power lines, satellite dishes on the same mast, or solar arrays. Any of these adds a category of risk beyond just the height.
- Any bracket where the fixings are into old, spalling brick or a chimney stack in poor condition. The bracket often comes off with a chunk of brick attached — dangerous to whoever's on the ladder, and expensive to make good afterwards.
- If you don't have the right sealant. Leaving open bolt holes into brickwork is a water ingress problem that appears as damp inside the property six to eighteen months later. Standard silicone from the kitchen drawer isn't the right product.
The three things people underestimate
1. Weight and balance
A full-size wideband aerial with a bracket assembly on it weighs more than it looks, and it's awkward to hold with one hand while cutting the lashing wire with the other. Dropping it costs you a broken roof tile or a dented car below at best; a person at worst.
2. What's holding it up
On a chimney, an aerial isn't screwed in — it's lashed with stainless steel wire under tension around the whole stack. Once you cut the wire, the whole thing moves. If you're the person holding it at that moment and you're on a ladder, you need to have thought that through in advance.
3. What the wall looks like afterwards
Every bolt hole needs to be filled and colour-matched. Every cable penetration needs to be capped. Do this poorly and either the render looks scarred forever, or water gets in behind the plaster. This finishing work is genuinely 20-30 minutes on a chimney aerial and it's what separates a DIY job from a professional one just as much as the take-down itself.
What a professional aerial removal actually gets you
For chimney or first-floor work, what you're paying for isn't the labour of unbolting an aerial — it's four things bundled into one visit:
- Insured, trained ladder and roof work — no risk transfer to your household insurance
- Proper roof ladder, hook and safety line — no cracked tiles from a domestic ladder leaned against the roof
- Colour-matched sealant and mastic on every fixing and cable entry — no water ingress problem later
- Full disposal and recycling of the aerial, bracket and cable — no scrap in your bin
For most homes the cost of that bundle is less than any one of those things failing.
The honest cost comparison
Someone genuinely determined to DIY a chimney aerial removal needs, at minimum: a roof ladder and hook (rental), a lashing-wire cutter, a small crowbar, colour-matched exterior mastic, and either a helper or a rope-and-pulley to lower the aerial safely. Add the value of a Saturday afternoon and the risk of getting a bit of it wrong. Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to remove a TV aerial yourself?
For a loft aerial or a low, wall-mounted aerial reachable from a stepladder — yes, if you're comfortable and you seal the fixings properly. For anything on a chimney, a gable at first-floor height, or a mast with multiple items on it — the honest answer is no. The height, the bracket weight and the finishing work all combine to make it a job worth paying for.
Can I remove a satellite dish myself?
Same rules as an aerial. A ground-floor mini-dish is fine to DIY. A first-floor gable-mounted dish, or a dish on a chimney, is not — the fall risk and the sealing work outweigh the labour saved.
What's the biggest risk in DIY aerial removal?
In order: a ladder fall, cracked roof tiles, unsealed bolt holes causing water ingress six months later, and dropping the aerial onto a car or paved area below. All are avoidable with proper kit — none are avoidable with a household stepladder.
Do I need any tools I might not already have?
For anything above ground floor, yes — a roof ladder and roof hook, a lashing-wire cutter for chimney aerials, and colour-matched exterior mastic. None are in a standard household toolkit and hiring them is usually most of the cost of paying an engineer.
What if I get part-way through and can't get the bracket off?

Will my home insurance cover me if I fall doing it myself?
This depends entirely on your policy. Many household policies exclude injury sustained during unqualified work at height on the property. Read the policy before deciding whether the labour saving is worth the risk — for most customers, when they check, the answer is no.
What if the aerial has fallen or is only partly attached?

How do I seal the bolt holes after removing an aerial?
Colour-matched exterior mastic or masonry filler, applied cleanly with a caulking gun, smoothed with a wet finger and left to cure. Standard bathroom silicone isn't the right product — it doesn't bond to masonry properly and fails within a couple of winters.
