Will Sky remove the old dish for me?
Do not assume one rule applies to every Sky product or contract. Equipment ownership, return requirements and any removal support can depend on the service, the equipment supplied and the customer's agreement. Sky's current return or recycle equipment guidance separates instructions for Sky Q or broadband equipment, Sky Stream pucks, Sky Glass equipment and other items; that page is not evidence that every dish, LNB, bracket or cable universally belongs to the household.
Before arranging independent removal, check the cancellation or return instructions in the relevant Sky account and contract, and ask Sky if the dish or any associated item is unclear. Also confirm that the dish is no longer required, is not part of a communal system and that you have the property owner's authority. What can be removed — and what can stay
Complete removal isn't always necessary. The right answer depends on what you actually need:
- Dish only. The dish and LNB come off, bracket stays. Sensible if the bracket is sound and you might want a satellite installation again in future.
- Dish and bracket. Full take-down with suitable making good agreed for the surface and its condition; decorating or repair may still be needed before painting, rendering or selling the house.
- Dish, bracket and external cable. Removal of the accessible external run, with suitable entry-point sealing where agreed in the scope and supported by the surface condition.
- Internal cabling. Often left in place — pulling it out usually means disturbing decoration for no practical benefit. Ends are capped and tidied.
The wall entry point
The Sky cable typically enters the house through a small drilled hole in the mortar, brick or a soffit. When the dish is removed, that hole needs capping — a proper cable gland or a suitable colour-matched mastic plug, not gaffer tape. Suitable sealing is included where agreed in the removal scope; existing damage may need a separate repair. Left open, it can let in water, cold air and, depending on the location, insects.
Shared, communal and rental systems
Two things worth checking before booking any removal. A dish serving a flat, HMO or communal system must not be removed without proper authority from the building owner or management company — it may serve other tenants. And if the property is rented, dish removal is normally the freeholder's decision rather than the tenant's; ask the landlord or managing agent first.
Safe disposal
Dish, LNB, bracket and cabling all go for aluminium, steel and copper recycling. You don't end up with a bag of scrap in your bin.
