“Wired” and “wireless” do not describe a complete CCTV system. A camera can send video over Wi-Fi while taking power from the mains and recording locally, or use a wired network while storing selected events in the cloud. Compare three independent axes
- Video transport: does the camera send its stream over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a proprietary radio link or a mobile connection?
- Power source: is it powered by PoE, separate low-voltage cabling, a mains adapter, battery or another designed supply?
- Storage and recording mode: does it record continuously or on events, and is footage kept on the camera, a local recorder, a local server, cloud storage or a documented hybrid?
Treat each axis as its own design decision. “Wireless” video transport does not mean battery power or cloud-only recording, and “wired” does not guarantee a local recorder, continuous footage or operation through every outage.
Common combinations
- PoE camera with local NVR: wired video, wired power and local recording; remote access or cloud backup may still be added.
- Mains-powered Wi-Fi camera: wireless video, fixed mains power and local, cloud or hybrid recording depending on the product.
- Battery Wi-Fi camera: wireless video, battery power and usually event-led recording to the device, hub, cloud or a combination.
- Wireless camera with a local hub: radio or Wi-Fi transport can feed storage inside the property rather than making cloud storage compulsory.
The right combination follows the required coverage, recording continuity, evidence purpose, available routes, outage behaviour, maintenance plan and current product specifications.
Reliability means mapping the actual failure modes
A wired link can remove dependence on local Wi-Fi, but cables, switches, recorders, disks and power can still fail. A wireless design adds radio conditions and may depend on a battery, mains adapter, hub or cloud service. Record every dependency, then test the finished system rather than declaring one category immune to dropouts.
- Disconnect broadband and confirm which live view, local recording, alerts and remote functions continue.
- Test the documented response to power loss, including any UPS or battery behaviour actually provided.
- Confirm what happens if Wi-Fi, a switch, hub, recorder, storage device or cloud service is unavailable.
- Review event gaps and playback from each camera after the test; a healthy live view is not proof of recording.
Calculate retention from the proposed streams and recorder
Do not promise weeks or months from disk size alone. Record the exact camera model, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and measured or specified stream rate. Record the recorder model, supported channels and throughput, recording schedule, event rules, installed drives and usable storage. Use current manufacturer data sheets for the proposed products.
For a continuous-recording estimate, divide usable storage in bits by the combined stream bitrate and then by 86,400 seconds per day. As an illustrative calculation, four streams averaging 4 Mb/s each total 16 Mb/s; a nominal 2 TB provides about 11.6 theoretical days before filesystem overhead, bitrate variation, secondary streams or reserved capacity. It is not a quotation or guarantee. Event recording needs an evidenced activity assumption rather than the same calculation with a guessed percentage.

Evidence quality cannot be inferred from megapixels
Whether footage can identify a person, registration or event depends on the required purpose, field of view, subject distance, lens, lighting, motion, exposure, compression, mounting, obstruction and recorder settings. Validate the important scenes in day, night and relevant movement conditions, then preserve sample exports. No wired, wireless, 4K or 8-megapixel label guarantees identification.
Compare support and lifespan from current product evidence
Do not assign universal replacement lives to either category. Compare warranty, current software and security-update policy, battery replacement route, storage serviceability, subscription and cloud-exit terms, product availability and the customer's maintenance plan. Confirm these against the exact camera, hub and recorder models at quotation and handover.
Data protection and sector requirements
Official ICO surveillance guidance checked 3 September 2026. The ICO says its organisational video-surveillance guidance is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act and may change. The controller must define the purpose, lawful basis, necessary coverage, evidence quality, access, security and retention for the actual use. A local recorder, cloud camera or installation method is not automatically compliant for a care, medical, legal, workplace or other regulated setting. The organisation should map applicable sector, contractual and data-protection requirements, complete its governance process and obtain appropriate specialist or legal advice where the stakes require it.
