Support starts by understanding the site properly
For ongoing managed support, we do not take responsibility for an unknown network from a remote login alone. The first step is an on-site onboarding visit so we can understand the equipment, cabling, internet connection, important services and administrative access before agreeing what we will support. Networks installed by another company are welcome; the existing setup is assessed on its condition and supportability rather than who originally supplied it.
- Identify gateways, routers, switches and access points
- Review the cabinet, patching and important cable routes
- Confirm administrator or cloud-controller access where available
- Record ISP details and important connectivity dependencies
- Identify supported CCTV, VoIP, backup internet and other connected systems
- Agree which equipment and services sit inside the support scope
- Document the useful network information needed for future fault finding
Most professional network equipment can be assessed for support
We are not limiting the service to networks originally installed by EDD or to one manufacturer. UniFi is a platform we work with regularly, but other routers, managed switches, access points and network equipment can be supported where we can obtain appropriate access, understand the configuration and sensibly take responsibility for it. If an old, locked-down or unsupported device cannot be managed reliably, we explain that during onboarding rather than pretending it is covered.
Proactive network and Wi-Fi monitoring
Supported systems can be monitored so we can see the health and availability of agreed gateways, switches, access points, internet connections and other managed devices. Alerts can help identify an offline device or connectivity change before a problem becomes a long troubleshooting session. We review monitoring as part of the agreed support relationship; alerts may be checked outside normal working hours where practical, but standard support does not include a guaranteed 24/7 response unless that is specifically agreed in writing.
- Gateway, switch and access-point availability
- WAN or internet connection status where the platform exposes it
- Offline managed devices and obvious network-health warnings
- Supported VoIP, CCTV or backup-connectivity equipment where included
- Configuration and firmware status where relevant to the agreed support scope
Remote network support first
Once the site is onboarded and remote management is established, many support jobs can be investigated without waiting for an engineer to drive to site. The aim is to work out which layer is actually failing — internet, gateway, switching, Wi-Fi, cabling or a connected service — and recover it remotely where that is safe and practical.
- Network-health and configuration checks
- Wi-Fi, access-point, gateway and switch diagnostics
- SSID, password and guest-network changes
- VLAN and switch-port changes where they are within the agreed scope
- Access-point adoption, reprovisioning and supported remote recovery
- Firmware management where appropriate
- Configuration backups and documentation where the platform allows it
- Performance investigation and internet-versus-network fault isolation
When the fault is physical, we can come and fix the physical problem
Remote support is useful until the thing that failed is a switch, access point, router, PoE supply, patch lead, cable run, cabinet power feed or another physical part of the infrastructure. Because EDD is an engineering company rather than a remote-only helpdesk, the same support relationship can continue into an on-site repair instead of ending with 'somebody needs to check that locally'. On-site labour, replacement equipment and remedial work are additional unless the customer's individual support agreement specifically includes an allowance for them.
- Failed switches, access points and routers
- PoE and local power faults
- Damaged or dead Ethernet cabling and sockets
- Network cabinet and patching faults
- Equipment replacement and recommissioning
- Physical tracing when the network documentation is incomplete
- Post-outage recovery and testing
We can deal with the internet provider as part of the fault
If testing shows the customer-side network is healthy and the fault sits with the broadband or leased-line provider, we can help take that conversation forward where the client authorises us to do so. That can include gathering useful fault information, speaking to the provider, coordinating an engineer visit and then checking the local network again afterwards. Provider response times and service restoration remain controlled by the provider unless a separate service commitment says otherwise.
Backup internet and failover support
Businesses that cannot comfortably stop when the primary connection fails can include backup connectivity in the wider support design. Depending on the site, that might be 4G/5G, Starlink or another secondary WAN, with the router configured to use it when required.
See our business internet solutions, 4G/5G internet and Starlink installation pages for the connection side of that work.
Support can cover more than the Wi-Fi network
The network is often the common layer underneath the rest of a site's technology, so an ongoing agreement can include more than access points and switches where EDD genuinely supports the equipment. That can include internet connectivity, VoIP phones, CCTV infrastructure, backup connections and other agreed technology around the premises. The exact scope is written around the customer rather than assuming every device plugged into the network automatically becomes our responsibility.
- Business Wi-Fi and managed network equipment
- Routers, gateways, switches and network cabinets
- Supported VoIP phones and phone-system infrastructure
- Supported CCTV and associated network equipment
- Primary and backup internet connectivity
- Agreed connected technology that EDD is equipped to support
Adds, moves and changes without starting from scratch every time
An ongoing relationship also covers the small changes that happen as a business grows: another access point, a new desk area, a different guest Wi-Fi setup, extra data points, a VoIP handset, a CCTV connection or a cabinet change. Remote configuration can be handled as part of the agreed support scope where appropriate, while physical additions can simply be quoted or added to the account rather than treated as a brand-new supplier relationship each time.
Basic IT help can be included where it fits the agreed scope
EDD's core responsibility on this service is the network and connected infrastructure, but basic end-user or device support can also be agreed where it is something we can genuinely own. We are not presenting the service as a complete outsourced MSP package for Microsoft 365, servers, endpoint security, backups and every desktop problem. If a business already has an IT company, we are happy to work alongside them and own the physical network and infrastructure layer; fuller managed IT services may be developed separately in future.
Hardware replacement and spares
We keep a limited amount of commonly used equipment and have established relationships with network and technology suppliers, which helps when replacement hardware is needed. We do not promise that every model will be held locally or that replacement stock will always be available immediately. Where a fault requires hardware, we confirm the practical replacement options and availability before committing to the repair plan.
Custom support agreements rather than one generic package
A small office with two access points does not need the same agreement as a multi-floor care setting with managed switching, VoIP, CCTV and backup connectivity. After onboarding, we agree the systems covered, monitoring and remote-management scope, what routine changes are included, how additional on-site work is charged and the contract term that suits the site. Support can be agreed on a fixed term or a rolling basis where appropriate. Prices and response guarantees are not published as universal promises because the scope can vary substantially between sites.
Need a one-off repair rather than managed support?
You do not need an ongoing support contract just to ask us to investigate a broken network. One-off fault-finding, dead ports, Wi-Fi failures, damaged cabling and inherited-network problems remain covered by our business network repairs and fault-finding service. Ongoing onboarding is for customers who want EDD to understand and support the site after the immediate fault is resolved.
Need a new network rather than ongoing support?
If the site needs a new Wi-Fi and network design, structured cabling, switches, gateway or wider upgrade rather than support for an existing system, see our business Wi-Fi and commercial network installation service. The support relationship can then be agreed around the finished installation if required.
A real ongoing support relationship
On a Greater Manchester care-home project, Evolution Data & Digital upgraded the site's managed network and later took responsibility for its VoIP phones as part of the wider support relationship. It is a real example of the model this service is designed around: one engineering company that understands the infrastructure and can continue supporting the connected systems after the installation is complete.
North West business network support
We are Stockport-based and currently keep ongoing managed-support relationships within the North West so an engineer can get to site when remote work is not enough. Suitable support enquiries are considered across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and the wider North West according to the site, equipment and support requirement.
