Starlink Failover Installation for a Manchester City Centre Office

A Manchester city-centre office wanted an independent backup internet connection to improve resilience around work-critical systems. Evolution Data & Digital installed Starlink on a weighted non-penetrating flat-roof mount, then handed the connection over to the client’s IT team for integration into the existing network.

EDD installed the Starlink dish on a weighted non-penetrating mount on the office roof, providing the physical secondary connection for the client's IT team to integrate.

Secondary internet connection for business resilience

Why the office wanted a second internet connection

Modern offices can rely on internet connectivity for important systems and everyday workflows. Depending on the organisation, that might include cloud services, hosted applications, communications, remote access or online operational systems. These are general examples of why resilience can matter; we are not identifying this client’s particular systems.

The confirmed requirement here was to help protect work-critical systems from depending on a single internet connection. The office wanted a second internet path as part of its failover planning.

Starlink as a backup connection — not a replacement for the whole network

Starlink provided an additional internet connection for the office. The existing office network remained in place, and the client’s IT team handled integration and failover configuration around its own systems. This project was not a replacement of the office’s existing network or IT support.

The right resilience approach depends on the site, the existing service and the organisation’s requirements. Our business internet solutions cover the connectivity options, while our guide to Starlink for business backup internet and failover explains the wider considerations.

Installing Starlink on a Manchester city-centre flat roof

EDD’s scope centred on the roof-side Starlink installation and the physical connection work. The dish was installed on the office’s flat roof using a freestanding mounting frame. The project photographs show the pole-mounted dish, weighted base and the cable at roof level during installation.

The mounting position and physical route are part of a commercial connectivity project: they need to suit the roof environment and the agreed handoff to the organisation’s existing IT team.

A weighted non-penetrating roof mount

The Starlink dish was mounted on a pole above a freestanding frame, stabilised with concrete ballast. At the mounting point, the frame was not mechanically fixed through the roof membrane.

A non-penetrating mount can be useful on an appropriate flat-roof installation when the roof, site conditions and installation design support that approach. It is not a universal solution for every roof; the mounting method needs to be considered for the specific site.

The freestanding frame used concrete ballast to stabilise the Starlink mast without fixing the mount through the roof membrane at the mounting point.

EDD handled the roof work. The IT team handled the network.

On this project EDD did not need to replace or redesign the client’s existing network. We completed the rooftop Starlink installation and provided the physical secondary connection. The client’s IT team then integrated Starlink into the existing office network and configured the failover behaviour around its own systems.

That clear division of responsibility allowed each team to handle the part it owned: EDD took responsibility for the roof-side connectivity work, while the IT team retained responsibility for the internal network and its failover policy.

Working alongside an existing IT team

Commercial connectivity work can sit alongside an organisation’s in-house IT team, MSP, IT consultant or network administrator. EDD can take ownership of physical connectivity infrastructure and coordinate the handoff without taking over the organisation’s established IT support.

The same principle applies to wider commercial network installations: keep technical responsibilities clear, and make sure the physical work connects properly with the team responsible for the network.

Why the physical installation still matters in a failover project

A secondary service still depends on a practical physical installation. Depending on the site, considerations may include the roof environment, mounting position, cable route, equipment access, handoff point and future maintenance access. Those details need to be considered for the particular building and agreed scope.

The result: a second connectivity path ready for network integration

  • Starlink physically installed on the office flat roof
  • Weighted non-penetrating mounting method used
  • Secondary internet infrastructure provided
  • Connection handed over for integration into the existing office network
  • Project supported the office’s failover and resilience requirement

The client’s IT team completed the internal network integration. This case study does not claim a speed, uptime, failover time or application test result.

Business resilience without replacing everything

Not every business needs EDD to replace its firewall, switching, Wi-Fi or IT support. Sometimes the right solution is to solve the missing connectivity layer properly and hand it to the team already responsible for the network.

Need a Backup Internet Connection for Your Business?

If a single internet connection is a point of risk for your office or site, we can assess the physical connectivity options and work alongside your existing IT team where appropriate. That may include Starlink, 4G/5G, fixed connectivity or another proportionate resilience route depending on the site.
