Background
The pub sits in a rural area around Buxton. Its existing broadband relied on an older BT copper telephone line that had become unstable and unreliable. Whenever the connection dropped, essential business systems — the card terminals in particular — dropped with it.
The owners were understandably frustrated. Repeated outages during service created delays at the bar, awkward moments with customers and a real risk of lost trade during the busiest hours of the week.
The commercial challenge
Internet connectivity is now essential infrastructure for a hospitality business. On any given evening, the pub's connection may be supporting:
- Card machines and till systems
- Online bookings and reservation platforms
- Administration and staff communication
- Music or entertainment systems
- Customer WiFi and other connected equipment
This wasn't a case of slow browsing. An unreliable line was directly affecting the pub's ability to consistently take payment — potentially a significant loss of trade during busy sessions.
The solution
Evolution assessed the site and recommended Starlink supported by a TP-Link Deco WiFi system. The work included:
- Assessing the site and mounting options
- Identifying a suitable position with a clear view of the sky
- Installing and securely mounting the Starlink equipment
- Routing the cable neatly into the premises
- Configuring the Starlink connection
- Installing Deco units to cover the trading areas
- Connecting and testing important business devices
- Checking card-machine connectivity end-to-end
Why Starlink suited the pub
The existing copper infrastructure was the fundamental restriction — there was little point tuning a router or replacing a modem when the line itself was the issue. Starlink allowed the pub to access a modern internet service without waiting for full-fibre infrastructure to reach the rural property.
The Deco system then distributed that connection cleanly around the areas where it mattered — behind the bar, near the card terminals and across the trading floor.
Result
The customer has reported no further card-machine connectivity problems since the new system was installed. In practical terms that means:
- More dependable internet connectivity
- Stable connectivity for card transactions
- Reduced risk of payment disruption during service
- Improved WiFi coverage around the pub
- Less reliance on the unstable copper connection
- Greater confidence during busy trading periods
- A solution designed around the pub's operational needs
